What types of payment do you accept?
We accept several forms of payment. In fact, we’re one of the few agencies that allow you to pay for a car rental with a debit card or cash. We accept all of the following:
- Debit Card
- American Express
What are your age requirements?
Renters and any additional drivers must be at least 23 years old.
What kind of license do I need?
All renters and drivers must have a valid Ohio driver’s license. We don’t accept out-of-state licenses at this time. And, unfortunately, we are unable to rent to someone with a suspended license—even if the person has driving privileges.
Can I buy insurance from you?
Since we aren’t licensed insurance agents, we can’t sell you insurance. If you don’t already have a licensed agent, we can recommend one to you. Local agencies offer minimum-coverage insurance for as little as $30–$40 per month.
What if I just have liability?
If you have liability, you can rent from us. All you need to do is pay an additional fee for a Physical Damage Waiver. The Physical Damage Waiver covers damage to the rental in accordance to the contract.
What if I already have full coverage?
If you already have full coverage, you won’t have any additional charges—as long as your comprehensive and collision coverage transfers to car rentals. Many do, but call your insurance company and check if you are unsure.
How are your rates calculated?
The rates are based on a 24-hour day that starts at the time the vehicle was rented. The vehicle must be returned at the same time on the day it’s due back. For example, if you have a one-day rental that you pick up Thursday at 2 p.m., it will be due Friday at 2 p.m. We do have a 59-minute grace period. If the vehicle is returned after the grace period, the renter is charged for another full day. Rentals returned on a Saturday are due back by noon, regardless of the time they were picked up.
Are there any fees in addition to the rental rate?
Taxes, fees, and other charges will be listed on the contract, and a representative will go over these charges with you before you sign it. The city of Cleveland charges a one-time fee of six dollars for each contract. Sales tax also applies to the car rentals.
Can I add additional drivers?
Additional drivers may be added to the contract for free, but they must be listed on the contract. All drivers need to present their driver’s licenses and insurance information to the agent.

Where can I take my car rental?
You need to stay in the state of Ohio.
What should I do if I am having problems with my rental car?

What should I do if I am involved in an accident?
Call the police immediately to report the accident. Get as much information as possible from the other driver. Then call us as soon as possible.
What should I do if the vehicle is stolen?
Call the police immediately to report the stolen vehicle, and then notify us of the situation at once.
What should I do if I lock the keys in the vehicle?
The customer is responsible for any incurred charges if the keys are locked in the vehicle. If this happens during business hours, call us and an employee can unlock the car for a ten-dollar charge if you’re in town. If this occurs after-hours, you must wait until we open to let us know. The customer is financially responsible for any damage that occurs to the car while the keys are being retrieved.
What if I lose the keys?
City Auto Rental does not provide spare keys. If you have lost or misplaced the keys, you need to call us at (216) 688-0208. You will be responsible for the cost of a replacement key.
What if I run out of fuel?
The customer is fully responsible.
Can I smoke in the vehicle?
No, our fleet is nonsmoking. If you return the vehicle and it smells like smoke, you will be responsible for paying a cleaning fee.
Returning the Vehicle
Do I need to clean the car before I return it?
Yes, please return the vehicle in the same condition it was when you picked it up. If it is not returned in the same condition, a cleaning fee will be assessed.
Can I put air fresheners in it?
No, our policies don’t allow customers to put any kind of air freshener, spray, perfume, or scented product in the vehicle. If you rent a car and use some kind of fragrance on it, a cleaning fee will be assessed.
Do I need to refill the gas tank before returning my rental?
You need to return the vehicle with the same amount of fuel it had when you picked it up. That amount is indicated on your contract. If you return the car with extra fuel, we do not reimburse you. However, you will be charged if you return the car rental with less fuel than was required.
When does my rental need to be returned?
The vehicle needs to be returned at the same time it was picked up. If you picked the vehicle up at 1:00 p.m., then it needs to be returned at 1:00 p.m. on the day it’s due. If the vehicle isn’t returned by that time, you’re charged for another full day. Vehicles returned on a Saturday must be back by noon, regardless of the time they were rented.
Who pays for speeding tickets and other traffic violations?
The renter is responsible for paying these tickets. When we receive them in the mail, we give the city that issued the ticket the name and address of the renter that is responsible.
Do you sell used cars?
Yes, we have several used cars for sale. In fact, you can buy almost any vehicle from our rental fleet. We offer several financing plans so that people of all credit scores can buy from us.
